Correct about the techno-changes in guidance/navigation systems in the
past few years. Paying wireless int'l calls couldn't have been cheap.
Speaking of island hopping, are you getting in on some good fishing on your cruise?

I fished briefly on the last half of our Gulf Stream crossing but
nothing to show for it except a stolen lure and badly bitten up mono
leader. Must have been something with sharp teeth. Conventional
wisdom is that Mahi mahi will not bite on wire leaders so not much
choice unless you're after the really big stuff.
We've been in relatively shallow water ever since and conditions
offshore have been fairly rough.
Gnawing on a leader in such fashion is an indicator of Shark or Barracuda?
===
More likely a shark in my opinion. I've caught barracuda on mono
leaders a number of times but once saw a shark grab a live bait fish
on mono with barely a twitch of the pole.
Maybe a wahoo.
===
Possibly, there are lots of Wahoo around here, mostly on the eastern
side of the Bahamas however. I have no personal experience catching
Wahoo but it's my understanding that you have to troll for them at
about 15 kts, too fast for us. We'd hear the big sportfishing boats
talking about them on the radio when we were way down in the out
islands. It sounded like they were losing as many as they caught.
We catch them at under 10 kts all the time. Keep it closer to 5 and you
can get Mahi and Wahoo from the same bait.
Want to see what a Wahoo, at least a West Coast Wahoo does to lures? They
are very toothy.

I've had great luck with these for dolphin and wahoo in the Atlantic.

Thanks. Where do you fish?
I've had good mahi results with something called a pink and white
Rattlejet lure.

The design is very similar. I fish in the Keys most often. Occasionally
as far north as Boynton Beach.

Yes, the Rattle Jet is probably a little smaller but very similar.
We'll be heading back throught the Keys in a few days. If you see a
Grand Banks 49 with fishing gear on the flybridge, stop by and say
hello.
That would be great but I'm about two weeks away from my next trip down
there.
