Screening luggage doesn't mean to destroy it.
More and more stuff gets now general pardon under "homeland security"
cover.
Looking at the photos I think the bag fell of the trolley and was run
over by something. To bad that those responsible can hide behind obscure
regulations
This quote from the airline is what kills me:

If they are unable to provide additional care, what is it that they are
charging the extra $50 special handling fee for?
