Speaking of SC, I just did a quickie calculation of what my state
income tax would be down there. It's right at $3000 more than I pay here!

If you went to Florida there would be no income tax at all and I am
not sure how property taxes compare. On a $200k (appraised value)
home, the tax is $1687 with the homestead adjustment.. These
appraisals are intentionally low so they do not have to adjust therm
when we have a housing slump like they did a few years ago.

Here, on a $615K (appraised value) home, the taxes are $7285.

California actually is decent on property taxes. But that is because we
passed the famous Prop. 13 about 1978. The taxes were based on the price
you paid for the house and could go up 2% a year. Taxes are 1% of the
present prop. 13 value plus any local tax overrides. Voted by the
taxpayers. Comes out to about 1.2%. Of course in my area, I do not think
there are any houses that sell for as little as $600k. My taxes are about
$2200 a year. As I bought my home in 1979 for $138.5k. But there are a
lot of people in my area that are paying $20k a year in taxes or more.

$22.6K for property taxes for us in MA. It actually went down a little
two years ago because I discovered an error in the town's tax
assessment. They were charging us the full tax rate on all of the land
but about 2 acres are wetlands as delineated by the town conservation
committee.

The savings was brief however. Went back up again last year because the
town approved, built and opened a new high school the likes of which
every college in the country would die for as their campus.
