I have heard that 'gun parts' can be shipped through USPS and UPS. Don't know for
sure though.

I've heard the same thing and "machine parts" or "tool parts" are no
issue at all (hint). I was recently in touch with a well known custom
shop and they recommended Fed Ex with a machine parts designation.

I don't understand what the big deal is. My buddy bought a new Ruger
pistol that he had to return to the factory for warranty repair of the
front sight.

He took it to the dealer he bought it from who sent it back to Ruger.
Ruger repaired it and shipped it back directly to my friend via UPS.

He had a dealer locally to which he could return it. If he'd bought it online, it may
have been a different story. Once he accepts it from the FFL, he can't simply drive
it back to the dealer.
