I-95 and South Carolina scares you? That's just silly! As long as you don't act like a yankee asshat, you'll be fine. 
I, however, would want to carry in and around Baltimore and certain other areas of MD.
I didn't find South Carolina scary at all. In fact, the people were
super friendly. I told my wife I needed to hang a sign around my neck
that said, "I am fine, thank you". Everyone I walked by had a
friendly greeting and asked how I was.
