It would have been better for all, including

If Wilson had been indicted he would have automatically lost his job
and been responsible for his own legal defense cost, which would be
considerable.

Usually the union would force them to keep him on the payroll until he
was actually convicted, not just charged.

Harry's lib arts degree failed him, he doesn't know how the crim justice
system works...

Putting yourself in Wilson's shoes for a minute, how would you react
if a punk kid (and he was a punk) reached into your car window,
punched you, and tried to grab your gun? That's not a very good
opening scenario for a peaceful resolution.

In the grand scheme of police shootings, this is as justifiable as any
I have seen. Most just involve a cop who shot a guy for a "furtive
move" or a shiny object.
Like Zimmerman, they may have had a valid beef with the process but
they hitched the wagon to the wrong horse. This was not the case they
should have pursued.
When you start with a guy who is walking away from a strong arm
robbery, then he assaults an officer (neither in dispute) it is not
the most sympathetic victim when that officer shoots him.

Unless he's black and useless...
