A great article:

"One New Jersey union representative was even blunter about the work
his organization does to keep bad teachers in the classroom, saying:
“I’ve gone in and defended teachers who shouldn’t even be pumping
gas.”

When the pay wasn't that great people went into teaching because they
liked kids, liked teaching and liked the long summer vacations. Once
the unions were successful in raising salaries, people went into
teaching because they liked the money and the benefits. The kids
became secondary and the unions tolerated mediocrity.
