you are entitled to an answer. It's not a matter of "could," it's a
matter of "why bother?"

Notwithstanding your deflection, I'll bet he/we still think that
question is too tough for you to answer truthfully.

That's his typical response when the question's just too hard for him to answer. Sometimes, in the
interest of good writing, he varies his response by calling names.
