You guys must be good. Our longest range target was only 300 yards, for the M14.

That's my recollection also (circa 1967 at Ft Jackson) but the M14 was
so accurate that I don't think 500 yards would have been that big a
problem

When qualifying I was hitting every target except the damn 50 yard target. After about three misses
my spotter reminded me that I'd zeroed at 150 yards and was shooting over the damn target every
time. Those were my only misses. I really liked that rifle.

And you're right. I think 500 yards would be very hittable, even without a scope. Probably have to
aim about a foot over the silhouette's head.

I have not looked (M1A locked up) but doesn't the GI sight go out that
far?

If you are zero at 150 yards, you should only be a few inches high at
50 yards.
I think the old saw was of you BZO at 250 meters you are pretty much
dead on at 22 meters and it is a few inches high everywhere in
between.
If you are shooting at center mass, you should still be hitting
something important anywhere in between.

Well, the 50 yard silhouette is smaller than the 300 yarder. A few inches, aiming at center of mass,
puts the round right over the top. I should have been aiming at the bottom of the target.
