I think the UMW is as much as fault for our dependence on coal as the

Then you have those congress people who have no interest in putting
all of those people out of work. If you shut down the coal mines,
there are several states that would be tossed into instant poverty
with little hope of replacing those jobs with anything those people
are qualified to do.
I really believe environmental costs will end up driving coal out of
the market anyway. By the time you pay for the scrubbers and the other
maintenance of a coal plant, natural gas is a far more attractive
choice.

I did have a suggestion after Katrina that nobody actually tried. They
could have put some of those guys and their "mountain raping" machines
to work filling barges and dump that dirt in New Orleans, getting the
underwater parts of the city up above the FEMA line.
It would have been expensive but nothing compared to levees and paying
for the flood when they fail the next time.



You missed the point. The spot was on corporate honesty. The environment
was just a foil.
