i'm a beginner, so smoother water is what i'm looking for right now. lakes,
rivers or shorelines that can accomodate beginners would be great.

There are plenty of paddlers in NJ as well as places to paddle. What sort
of kayaking are you interested in? There's lakes, rivers, shorelines, not
too much whitewater but enough to keep you busy (and it's not a long trip
to
nearby states).
