Beta is going fine and I'll soon offer a "crap free" option to those that want to read it. Of course, all others are free to continue to post crap and swear they are trying to "clean up" the newsgroup. Gene, I am curious when you open your server will you allow people access to your server whose sole purpose of reading rec.boats is to observe and comment about "rec.boats" being flushed down the toilet, then spend 90% of their time talking about the Seven Little Schitts? It seems that that would be counterproductive to your reason for starting a "filtered server". |

Sure! The funny thing is.... they can post their patooties off and the posts will propagate to all servers.... they will just be filtered from *my* server. Yes, for those who were interested, or pretending they knew what my posting problem was, Gene had not given me posting rights yet.. Here's a great big pffftttt for our resident windoze heroes who of course, had no clue... OK, here we go. I don't know exactly what Gene is doing over there (well I kinda' do) but it is indeed an interesting setup. Boating posts get through, even the occasional boating post from wafa. However, most traffic here "lately" never shows up in the reader, it gets killed at the server level, way cool. From what I know, the system does not block individual users or IP's, it blocks garbage, no matter who posts it. Even when I respond to some ahole like Salty, my own posts don't get through, but posts to boaters, do. From what I understand he (Gene) has been working on algorithms that not only detect the garbage (probably with keywords) but it also detects patterns that are problematic. Certain posters only argue, certain patterns emerge in flame fests, the system "knows" that, and those posts probably won't get through. Being that it would be pretty hard to keep up with, I imagine the system is somewhat dynamic in it's monitoring. But again, it does let the good posts through, no matter who makes them, without killing any particular user or IP. For those of you who know about this stuff, this is way advanced programming and of course much more difficult to spoof than a simple kill file. It is very similar to the algorithms we have developed over the years for hackers and spam. For those of you who don't, take my word for it, this will revolutionize wrecked.boats, it will be big. I have been beta testing with agent 4.2 for about a week and I have not noticed one "good" post that has been skipped, and similarly, no idiot posts get through either. On the other hand, it is not a lie detector, so I will add salty, wafa, and jimh to the local kill file in my agent, as even their boat related, googled, madeup, whatever stuff, is of no interest to me. I encourage everyone to use their own personal KF's along with Gene's programming, a lot of you don't want to hear from me either And a quick to our windoze heroes and Essex posers, I didn't KF myself, and it was not a problem on my end, Gene just didn't "turn the key" yet. . But we all knew that. Server administration is a little more advanced than being able to change a hdd in a plug and pray system and calling geek squad to have a router installed Like I said Harry, and Salty, I have been working in this field for a long time. My wife and I installed and ran several networks in the early 90's including a T1 supported system that coupled three facilities in CT, and Mass...It was still fun though to watch the heroes "change feet".. Anyway, I encourage anyone sick of the stooges to get with Gene and set up with his private news server, it is going to change the lives of quite a few here. Most of the Idiot Narcissists, liars, and cowardly trolls, will be completely impotent and completely isolated, unnoticed..... good luck, and have fun, sorry wafa. After over a decade of mischief, your play time is finally over.... Hope you don't need to call your wife's imaginary "special line". I'm lovin' it, but take your shots now, you won't have anyone to kick around anymore, after next week... In space, no one can hear you scream... This will be my last troll to this group.. I wanna' get through.. but I had to take one last shot.. It's been fun wafa, salty, jimh, etc. but it's about to get a lot better.. And on a separate note. Being in the Admin. business for almost a decade and a half. My wife has been involved in some revolutionary language and server development initiatives, some of our security and tracking systems have moved into main stream use. We have made a lot of friends, especially in some of the local NOC's when we were setting up the network for INCO Limited (real fortune 500 for the record wafa) in the early 90's. It's very interesting how much info one can garner with a simple phone call to a friend who works at a local switching station down on the shoreline This place is gonna' be fun again.. |
