Indeed, I had an accident when I slipped and dropped a canoe on my foot
as I took it out the water. My poor toes were hurting for as much as
/one or two whole minutes/.

Sheesh! I'd better give up this paddling lark before it kills me...

I saw an accident where someone dropped a kayak, amputating his big toe.
It was sewed back on but didn't heal so was removed again a few weeks later.
It was his own design of boat and had some corners with very small radii.
