Article on the decline of river fishing

Found an interesting article in the online times newspaper today.
Seems that anglers are moving in large numbers away from river fishing
to artificially stocked waters where they are guaranteed a good catch.
This could be very positive news for the access situation on our rivers
in the long term.

- I've heard for a few quid more they lay on a few canoeists that people can
throw stones at, for that authentic river feel ...

Let me get this straight... to alleviate the anglers vs canoeist access
problems, all canoeists should become anglers, over fish the rivers and
persuade the real anglers to go to lakes?

Think I'm going to start drowning maggots behind my boat.

Many years ago at a Scout District Canoeing weekend they had Curry on
the Saturday night. Someone went a bit OTT with the rice and what was
left over was tipped into the canal. The following day an Angling
competition was held a bit futher up. Not one fish was caught that day.

Sounds like the fish won the competition ;-)
