Al, Decked canoes are a sort of hybrid that offer the seaworthiness of
a kayak with the gear storage, accessibility and paddling comfort of a
canoe. The history of decked touring canoes harkens back to Inuit
designs of a bygone era, flows onward to John MacGregor's first Rob
Roy, chinker-built to his specifications in 1865, takes a turn to west
coast big water with James van Nostrand's lightning-fast Sea-1 and
makes a giant leap toward the penultimate solo expedition boat with
Verlen Kruger's decades long design experimentation that produced the
Loon, the Monarch and finally, the Sea Wind.

They paddle well with a single blade, but can also be doubled, and many
can be sailed as well.
