A friend here in Fairbanks has won it twice. He's a HS science teacher by
day and animal paddler after hours, paddling every day throughout the year
before the first race, usually in the dark. In Alaska? Yes, the
Delta-Clearwater River is spring-fed and open throughout the year. There's
a hell of a lot of steam when the temps drop below 0, and visibility is near
impossible below -30. Jim could be seen heading out of town with his boat
on his car every evening after school, even in sub-zero temps.

The paddling is all fla****er, except for what the wind can deliver, which
can actually be quite a bitch on Lake Laberge, helped by a steady current of
3-6 mph. But you don't feel the current on a river this size; it will be a
back-breaking, sleep-depriving three days of 24-hr paddling. You up for
that? At least they no longer include the Chilcoot trail.
