I already use Yakima's J-cradles, but want to carry a second boat
flat.

Does anyone like Yakima's Mako saddles better than the Landshark
ones, and how come?

And what about those Hullyrollers? Are they as easy on a boat's
finish as one of saddles would be?


I suppose I could go with another brand if they fit on round bars,
too.

INHO if you can find a set of the old TLC saddles, snatch them up.

The holy rollers work fine and don't mess your finish.

I have exactly that setup...and found that the Mako's will eat your gel coat
if you don't also purchase and instal their pads ($10 for 2) They marked up
my plastic Necky too..otherwise they are so flexible you don't have to
adjust much from boat to boat and loading from the rear is easier with my
SUV. The Yakima cradles are more difficult to load if your vehicle's
profile is very high...I have to almost climb on top to do it..but wish I
had two cradles if I had it to do over again...a plus for both is that they
are both fast to instal or take off if you want to lockem up while you're
gone.

I'll second that! I'm still using a set of TLC saddles that are about
12 years old now, and they're still great! At one point, I did try a
set of Makos, and they didn't get along well with my narrow, hard
chined boat.

home built Arctic Hawk, and the boat I'm wanting to put in the
saddles is the Wilderness Sys Arctic Hawk. They are very similar

Someday I'll have to replace my trusty old TLCs, so I'm always on the
lookout for another used set somewhere! :-)

Putting more thought into my opinion on the Mako's...the damage done to your
boats will be done by abrasion on the hull from the flexibility of the
saddles while you are driving no matter how tight you strap it down...I am
clueless why Yakima didn't include the pads to prevent this...check out the
reviews at www.paddle.net I paddle with a woman who bought a brand new
Romany..and was shocked when I pointed out the white powder (gel coat) all
over her pads and roof.

Yes...same basic dimensions, just different materials. In fact, both
my boats are hard chined (the other is a Current Designs Caribou).

It's definitely a problem finding a used set of TLCs, because most of
us who have them are holding on to them! :-) At the time I returned
the Makos I'd purchased, I also wrote to Yakima, requesting that they
bring back the TLC model, but I guess my little letter wasn't
influential enough. :-(

Woo hoo. I just let eBay be my friend. There were two sets of four
TLCs and a TLC/Hullyroller combo (Buy it Now!) for sale, and instead
of fooling with the auction, I just bought the combo NOW. Bidding
is still going on (in the mid-$20) for the other sets if you're
interested.

At this point, when I want to carry both boats on the car, the
Caribou goes in the TLCs, and I've re-shaped a pair of foam cradles
to accommodate the Arctic Hawk deck down on the rack. As long as I
tie it down securely, this arrangement works very well.
