$500? Yikes. No.

Take a look at the top three options on this page:
http://www.prolineracks.com/hitch-mount-boat-racks.html


and add a single bar to the roof of your cab (Thule or Yakima
half-packs are like $100-$130). Add a couple of cradles and straps,
and you should still be under $300. That would be the max you'd need
to spend. (If you go with a cheap foam cradle strapped directly to
your roof, you might get under $200, but the roof bar is much more
versatile). And if you can find any of this stuff used, even cheaper.

Inflated inner tube on the roofunder the boat, bow tied to the front
bumper, stern secured to a osb board tied to the tailgate with a crotch cut
in it. Friend transported a 18' sea kayak up and back from oregon to socal
for all of no cash outlay on an extended cab chevy s10. Said he had zero
troubles with the rig. Pat
