Algonquin Park (Barron River) and portaging a sea kayak
 

As much as I want to try this river (Barron River in Algonquin Park) I am a
little concerned about portaging a sea kayak -Nautaraid Raid II- as some of
the portages are 400 meters and this kayak weighs about 70 lbs and is not
exactly easy to carry. There will be two of us but over rocky terrain maybe
a little more difficult than I wish.

Any opinions or those who have tried this?

I used to trip in Killarney Provincial Park in kayaks. They were my own odd
designs though. The tandem had a huge cockpit & a yoke. The 32 pound solo
had a foam seat with a depression to fit my head. Both were easy to carry
as intended but were pigs to carry on one shoulder. I wouldn't dream of
doing Algonquin's rougher portages while carrying a boat by the ends.

Your kayak has a big cockpit, so I suggest that you rig a removeable yoke.
Or rent a canoe.

I did that route with a sea kayak about two years ago during the first week
of December. There was snow on the ground so it was a little slippery.
Great little trip. Not many people there that time of year.

Some of the portages are rocky so watch your footing but because of the
high traffic, are quite wide.

It beats me as to why anyone would want to take a kayak triping in a place
like Algonquin Park. I have seen people try and portage sea kayaks in the
park and quite frankly it looked painful and frustrating. I both canoe and
kayak and I would dream of taking a kayak on a portaging paddling trip. Do
yourself and your companion a favour and leave the kayak at home and get
yourself a proper canoe and portage packs. You will be glad you did.

Thanks for the reply. I totally agree but all I am doing is a day trip so I
figure a few short portages for the Barron River is doable. I have been to
Algonquin before by canoe and cannot imagine hauling a sea kayak for any
long portages.
