This is what the fishermen used to fish in. They'd come back so full

Whenever we anchored in Conception Bay awaiting clearance to dock at the ore jetty on Bell Island we would fish for cod to relieve the boredom. The method used was 'jigging' where each person lowered a weighted reflective lure fitted with a treble hook on a nylon line to approx one metre of the sea bed and then jigged by hand (raised and lowered the jigger approx a half metre) until a catch was made. Sometimes the fishing was slow but if the cod were 'running', Whoopee! Fish of 20lb. (9Kg) were average, Fish of 30 - 50lb (13 - 22Kg) were frequently caught and on one occasion a fish of nearly 100lb ( 45Kg) was landed. The Charlton Mira never bought fish - the freezer room was always full from our 'do it yourself' efforts. Regards, Tuppence |
