Ongiara

The newest of the ferries, is the "Ongiara", which entered service in
1960. It carries vehicles, as well as passengers, and occasionaly carries a fuel truck to Hanlan's Point for the Island Airport. When this service is required, regulations prohibit passengers from boarding, so one of the other ferries substitute. In this photo, the "Ongiara" is arriving at the Toronto dock, from Hanlan's point. The Toronto Island ferries provide sevice to three locations on the Islands; they are Hanlan's Point in the west, Center Island, and Ward's Island at the east end. The Ongiara were a native tribe, around the Niagara area, which is where the word Niagara was derived from. |
