Lighthouses to close
I know that there are some people here with a particular fascination
for lighthouses so I hope this topic will be of interest:- BBC Report: Lighthouses could be switched off... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/8471030.stm "Trinity House, the General Lighthouse Authority for England, Wales, the Channel Islands and Gibraltar, which owns most of the country's lighthouses, is consulting on proposals to stop using the historic buildings to guide sailors." The consultation period is now over, but the decision will not be made public until later. The lighthouses under threat are at Beachy Head, Hartland Point, Blackmore, Skokholm Island, Maryport and Orfordness. The use of new technology, especially GPS, threatens to make these historic landmarks, and seamarks, redundant. |

It makes sense to sell the lighthouses to those who would restore and keep them operating just for the historic value or love of the structure (as the article indicates was done to others). Too many times these days we simply discard the interesting things of the past that seem to have no value in today's modern society, seems strange to me as these same things become more treasured once they're gone. I sure hope a sound and prudent decision is made to save these historic and useful treasures. St. Pete , Fl USA |
