Didn't Garmin first start marketing the 45 back in 1998 or 1997?
btw, I just traded an old pressure cooker for a much newer model, the Garmin eTrex. nice try, though. Just got a new boat with new GPS so I'm selling my GARMIN 45 on eBay. Garmin has added some bells and whistles to its line of model 72's and 76's, which are basically outgrowths of the model 45 and 48. The real question in GPS selection, IMHO, is does the unit do what you need it to do, how easy is it to use underway, can it stand up to the marine environment, and is it affordable? The model 45 gets a thumbs up in all these categories. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rec.boats.marketplace is a moderated newsgroup. I recently traded an old pressure cooker for an eTrex. For a Garmin 45 and
enough batteries to keep it running for a week, I'd trade an old frying pan, you pick up the shipping both ways. The eTrex is currently in production, while the 45 is long out of it. The eTrex is currently in production BRBR Practical Sailor states that there is really no place on a boat for an eTrex. I suppose Jaxshby uses his to help him find himself around the kitchen whilst using that old pressure cooker.... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rec.boats.marketplace is a moderated newsgroup. nah, the dude is just trying to joker someone into paying a couple hundred
dollars for an obsolete, battery hog Model 45 he maybe picked up at a tag sale for $4. (I use the eTrex as backup on my boat and it works just fine. That older stuff, as above, just plain uses tooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many batteries to be useful even as backup.) Practical Sailor states that there is really no place on a boat for an eTrex. Is it too big for your boat? Does it not work on the water? Does it not provide a fix? to joker someone into paying a couple hundred
dollars for an obsolete, battery hog Model 45 he maybe picked up at a tag sale for $4. BRBR This unit cost $300 when I bought it new. It just sold for $75 and it works just as well now as it did when new. This is a bargain for a quality piece that does everthing a GPS is supposed to do, and more. Jax traded pots and pans for a cheap eTrex so that says a lot about his acumen. His comment about battery life is equally uninformed. This unit typically runs 20 hrs or more on four ordinary and inexpensive AA batteries. But most sailors just plug the unit into the ship's battery and never worry about it. My guess is that Jax doesn't have a ship battery, or a boat for that matter. His realm is the scullery.... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rec.boats.marketplace is a moderated newsgroup. dollars for an obsolete, battery hog Model 45 he maybe picked up at a tag sale for $4. This unit cost $300 when I bought it new. It just sold for $75 What a sad state of affairs. If you sleep well at night, P.T.Barnum would love you. and it worksjust as well now as it did when new. This is a bargain for a quality piecethat does everthing a GPS is supposed to do, and more. Jax traded pots andpans for a cheap eTrex so that says a lot about his acumen. Yes, it does. btw, the eTrex is still in production, while the 45 is so obsolete that the manufacturer stopped making it long ago. $75 is about $70 more than the unit is worth, to a knowledgeable sailor. His comment about battery life is equally uninformed. This unit typically runs20 hrs or more on four ordinary and inexpensive AA batteries. But mostsailors just plug the unit into the ship's battery and that cable for that obsolete unit is *how* much? and never worry about it. Because they can't see the unit in the cockpit then? Unless, of course, the boat is little as in tiny and no one really needs gps anyway. My guess is that Jax doesn't have a ship battery, or a boat for that matter. HONK! Wrong answer. Try again. His realm is the scullery.... Well, I do have a butane stove (excellent for a quick cup of coffee, about two minutes for boiling water), an alcohol/sterno SeaSwing stove (found brand new at an antique store, and to be used when the weather gets rougher), a two-burner propane stove, another pressure cooker, a stainless steel insulated French Press coffeemaker, frying pans, a Braun mixer/chopper, sauce pan, and wine glasses. And you? What do you have on your 22 foot Boston Whaler besides a couple obsolete gps's, a lead acid battery to run them, a chartplotter, a liferaft, two 406 EPIRBs and a frying pan with a broken handle? Sleep well at night, do you? ----------------------------------------------------------------------rec. boats.marketplace is a moderated newsgroup.
