Wayne, nice pics. One question though. Why did you choose a slow boat as
your mode of transportation. You could have done a low fly by in a plane
and gotten some great shots out the plane window. ;-)

Norman's Cay was taken over by a big time drug smuggler named Carlos
Lehder sometime back in the 70s. He is alledged to have founded the
Colombian Medellin Cartel. They were running a trans-shipment
operation at Norman's and some of the planes didn't make it all the
way. :-)

You can see the outline of the plane wreckage on Google Earth if you
zoom way in at Lat 24-35.667 by Lon 76-48.600

Slow is relative. We have a SeaRay runabout and several RIB dinghys
for zipping around at speed, but you really can't beat a nice big
trawler for traveling long distances and living aboard. On a 500
mile offshore run the trawler will beat any speedboat I know.

If you can figure out how to get pictures of coral reefs, fish and
caves from a plane window, I'd like to buy that camera. :-)

How little you know. Berkeley Breathed the cartoonist,[ draws Opus]
wrote for Boating and had a forty foot speedboat. Twin 600 hp Seatek
racing engines with 50 percent more power than a Cat or Cummins the
same size and weight. Arneson drives the ones with the shafts exiting
through the transom well above the on plane waterline. Seven blade
props that run with half the prop in the water. No drag from a shaft
or hub. 65 top speed, 50 for 900 miles. Deep V, intended for open
ocean. Low aero drag. No windshield, let alone radar. V berth, a small
saloon with room for six around a table. Tiny galley, cramped head. A
Carribean cruiser for the hurricane season.

There is McDuff's Restaurant/Norman's Cay Beach Club on the west side
near the middle of the air strip:

http://www.panoramio.com/photo/8246950

We ate at McDuff's twice, once going south and again coming back.
The food is good and they have a few rental beach cottages.

We anchored near here, took the dinghy across to the old dock, and
then walked up the road to the air strip:

Seems that the 'black box' (cockpit voice recorder) is installed near the

spy jobs they are decommissioning with budget cuts ;)

I prefer the up-close look myself. No airplane will ever be able to
back up slowly while you're tracking a big lobster!

That's one of the very reasons that when I fly I always will request a
back seat. I've never heard of a plane backing into a mountain.

Watched most of a documentary show on salvaging a big 747.
Seems that the 'black box' (cockpit voice recorder) is installed near the
tail section because that's where the engineers feel it has the best chance
of surviving.

My thoughts exactly!

Wrecked twin engine C-46 aircraft at Norman's Cay, crashed landed in
the water by drug smugglers in 1980.

Is the small resort on Norman's up and running again?

Ah, the "Bermuda Triangle" strikes again!

Sorry, Bill. I was posting to Wayne about the drug plane going down,
and accidentally used your post as a catalyst.

No thanks.
You know the trip under discussion is one of ten hours. How fancy do
you really need it?

That's our grandest boater and outdoorsman! Personally, I don't like
hotels. Boring, plain, predictable. But then again, that's how some
folks like their lives.

Just because you sleep in the back of your car when you travel doesn't
mean we do.

Yes, and I've never had a hotel room with 360 degree water views that
I could launch a dinghy from, and a lot of the places we go don't even
have guest cottages let alone a decent hotel.

Wayne, that's another advantage i can see about your boat. The
accomodations are as nice as you want them to be.

always.
