I rarely drive long distances in a car...as, for example, from Maryland to
Florida. I have better things to do with my time than waste two days on
the interstate.

Ah, but with a BMW you could make that trip in about 16 hours.

Eisboch

I've made it in 12. But I don't like doing it that way, and neither does
my wife. There are a few places way off the highway we stop for meals,
and a few motels we've come to rely on over the years.

We drive down to Florida about once every other year and fly the rest of
the time. We stop about halfway and then get an early start the next
morning.

Spending 12-16 hours driving a car...that was fun when I was in my early
20's...not now.

Once again, I can drive to BWI Airport in under an hour, waste an hour
at the airport, and then get down to Florida in two hours. That's four
hours versus 12-16 hours. There's nothing about driving the distance
that competes with that.

To me, my time is valuable. Wasting it driving south on the ugly,
dangerous Interstate is a waste of my time.

To each his own.

Judging by the amount of time you Waste here, your time doesn't seem to
be worth much at all.

I LOVE it... His time is valuable, yet he spends a most of his day reading
and posting to numerous usenet groups! That's why he doesn't like to drive
long distances... he'd be away from his computer for too long. His family
must be so proud. WAFA!

I don't fly, and really enjoy my driving trips to Florida.
Chicago-Florida might be a more scenic trip than going from the east
coast.
My route is @1200 miles, and there are only 3 places where I can run
into heavy traffic, barring occasional road work.
Leaving metro Chicago, Nashville, and Atlanta.
We always leave at dawn, taking care of the first. Nashville and
Atlanta get a dawn or noon time passage.
But we stop 2 nights on the way, so it's a 3 day trip.
Since 1200 miles is about 18 hours driving at 65mph, you can see we
stop often and get plenty of sleep.
No night driving, except some minutes before dawn, and we're usually
in a motel by 4 pm.
Always something new to see on the trip.
Coming home is a bitch though, since we overnight only once.
Got to work on that part. Most is simple psychology, since we have a
different mind set about ending vacation than beginning it.

I actually enjoy travel by car. I get to actually SEE things.

No, I think it's possible. I've done it from MA to Jupiter, FL in just
about 25-26 hours.
It's just about 10 hours from my house to Annapolis, MD., so that leaves
roughly 15-16 hours.
Jupiter is much further south in Florida than where Harry is likely to have
driven .... about another additional 3 hour drive.
So, that leaves a difference of about 12-13 hours ..... very possible with
no construction or weather to deal with.

Same here. And my main reason for not driving at night is
you can't see anything!
Damn that's boring - and makes you sleepy too.

I've went from Jax, FL to western NY in 24, but I'm telling you, you
have to have the hammer down and you can't stop. And furthermore,
there's almost always something on I-95 to slow you down.
