Nonsense. Overpriced and overengineered as compared to what? Your
reasoning is consistent with your opinion of long distance travel on a boat,
experiencing the navigation and piloting challenges and the ports visited .
You'd rather fly directly to your destination and check into a hotel.
Others, like me, would rather experience the trip on a boat. You're not
wrong, but neither am I.

Back to cars:

No question that the principle of diminishing returns applies ... just like
audio equipment. People with a tin ear don't appreciate fine speakers or
amplifiers because they can't hear or appreciate the sound quality. It
makes no sense for them to spend any more than for a cheap boombox. Fine.
But for those of us that *do* appreciate high quality music reproduction, we
invest in higher quality gear.

A well engineered car like a BMW is the same. To some, a Yugo serves the
purpose. Point A to point B. To others, the excellent engineering,
refinement and driving experience of a BMW is appreciated and enjoyed.
Different strokes for different folks, that's all.

I can relate, from personal experience, having driven the 1500 miles from MA
to FL or back many times in several different vehicles. The BMW 750 was
the only one that I could comfortably drive non-stop (other than for gas or
brief breaks) and arrive without feeling like a complete zombie. It had the
perfect combination of suspension, seating (not too soft, not too hard) and
handling to make the driving experience very enjoyable. Impossible to do
in any other car or truck I've owned, and God knows, I've had a bunch of
them.

The only BMW that I've owned that I thought was waaaaay overdone in terms
of complicated electronic controls was the '06 M5. A brand new, very
advanced design, BMW had their hands full getting the bugs worked out of the
software on that car. I understand the newer ones are much better.

But, in terms of pure, overall performance and almost perfect engineering,
they don't come close to a Porsche 911 Twin Turbo. :-)
But, I'd still never attempt a 1500 mile, non-stop trip in it.

My criteria for a car:

quality engineering and assembly.

good handling characteristics for the kind of driving I do.

good accident avoidance capabilities.

reasonable cost for parts and repairs, available from dealers who stock
just about everything my car will need.

reasonable sales price for new car.

A few weeks ago, I was looking at a new BMW 535i sedan. With a few
modest options, the sticker price was well over $60,000, about $20,000
to $25,000 more than several Japanese sedans that in my opinion have a
higher level of assembly and drive just as well.

I rarely drive long distances in a car...as, for example, from Maryland
to Florida. I have better things to do with my time than waste two days
on the interstate.

I've made it in 12. But I don't like doing it that way, and neither does
my wife. There are a few places way off the highway we stop for meals,
and a few motels we've come to rely on over the years.

We drive down to Florida about once every other year and fly the rest of
the time. We stop about halfway and then get an early start the next
morning.

Spending 12-16 hours driving a car...that was fun when I was in my early
20's...not now.

Once again, I can drive to BWI Airport in under an hour, waste an hour
at the airport, and then get down to Florida in two hours. That's four
hours versus 12-16 hours. There's nothing about driving the distance
that competes with that.

To me, my time is valuable. Wasting it driving south on the ugly,
dangerous Interstate is a waste of my time.

I don't fly, and really enjoy my driving trips to Florida.
Chicago-Florida might be a more scenic trip than going from the east
coast.
My route is @1200 miles, and there are only 3 places where I can run
into heavy traffic, barring occasional road work.
Leaving metro Chicago, Nashville, and Atlanta.
We always leave at dawn, taking care of the first. Nashville and
Atlanta get a dawn or noon time passage.
But we stop 2 nights on the way, so it's a 3 day trip.
Since 1200 miles is about 18 hours driving at 65mph, you can see we
stop often and get plenty of sleep.
No night driving, except some minutes before dawn, and we're usually
in a motel by 4 pm.
Always something new to see on the trip.
Coming home is a bitch though, since we overnight only once.
Got to work on that part. Most is simple psychology, since we have a
different mind set about ending vacation than beginning it.

It's just about 10 hours from my house to Annapolis, MD., so that leaves

Jupiter is much further south in Florida than where Harry is likely to have

So, that leaves a difference of about 12-13 hours ..... very possible with

Funniest story about airline delays. When youngest graduated university, we
all stayed at a hotel next to LAX. We left daughter and went to airport.
She slept in. It is a 1 hr 15 minute flight to San Jose Airport. We turn
in rental car, go checkin and then find out the flight is delayed. We
finally leave to SJO, get my car at work, 10 minutes from the airport via
taxi, and drive home 35 minutes. Daughter is pulling up the street as to
the house as we turn corner above house. is a 5.5 hour drive from LAX to my
house. So the 3 hours of airplane trip took longer than sleeping in and
driving 5.5 hours. And this was before 9/11.

Ah, but with a BMW you could make that trip in about 16 hours.

Eisboch

I've made it in 12.

Bull****.

DC to Jacksonville is about 700 miles. You could probably do that in
12 hours without breaking the speed limit.- Hide quoted text -

Harry doesn't live in DC.

So? He doesn't live in jacksonville, either. From his driveway to the
Florida boarder may be LESS than the distance I allowed.

Meanwhile your tale of driving non-stop from JAX to western upstate NY
in 24 hours is positively hilarious.- Hide quoted text -

What's hilarious about it? My cousin, a truck driver, has done it in
21 hours several times with his '67 Impala SS.
If you take a look here, total driving time is 16 hours.

Yeah, but ONLY if there are no other cars on the road the whole way
down and all construction has been completed and cleaned up!- Hide quoted text -

Mapquest is usually pretty close. Just completed a trip to St. Louis
and back and we pretty close.

I-95 down the east coast is not remotely comparable to driving to St.
Louis

Mapquest estimates don't necessarily take a lot of things into account
that matter quite a bit.

What year was it when your brother allegedly made it in 21 hours?- Hide quoted text -

- Show quoted text -

Never said my brother made it anywhere in 21 hours.

Excuse, me. Your COUSIN. With all the inbreeding I didn't think it
made much difference.

And I also never

said that driving down I-95 was like driving to St. Louis.

It was the example you used to try and illustrate your point.

But, seeing
how you apparently are clueless, both are mostly interstate driving,
both are mostly rural open road with some cities sprinkled in, both
have comparable speed limits on comparable roads.

Yep, NYC is barely more than a cow town. The speed limit in that area
is irrelevant, as you may spend an hour moving 100 yards at times.

It's pretty obvious you have never made the trip yourself.- Hide quoted text -

psssst, you don't go through NYC to get to either Maryland OR western
NY. BUT, alas, I've driving through, around, and in NYC many times.
There's worse places.

Something about 24 hours nonstop trips the BS detector. How big is the
fuel tank and what is your mileage? I presume you wear diapers.

Casady

Who said non-stop? If you parsed can't stop as non-stop, that was not
my intent. I meant for any amount of time, such as lunch. Gas and go.

Get real. If you can't stop, it has to be nonstop. Can't stop doesn't
allow any stops for any reason. I parsed it to be either bad writing
or an outright lie. I will settle for bad writing. Been known to do
that myself.

From where I live in Maryland to the Florida line is about 12 hours if
we are not nailed by heavy traffic or construction on I-95. We don't do
that anymore, though. We usually stop in the Carolinas somewhere. It's a
dismal drive no matter how you do it, though.

One of the major bottlenecks is south of NYC. It can take hours to go
a few miles there at times.- Hide quoted text -

Let me see. Harry was talking about going from Maryland to the Florida
border. I was talking about going from Jax to western NY. YOU were
talking about going from Washington D.C. to Florida. Then Harry talks
again about going from Maryland to Florida, then YOU insert something
about NYC.........
Oh, and thanks for acknowledging my big "defict".......I take it
that's a local term up there.

When I was young I used to go from St. Pete Fla. To Springfield Mass in
26 hours. 8 hours driving, two hour nap, 8 more hours, 2 hour nap, 8
hours in... I did not break speed limits, I could not be late. IIRC, it
was 1325 miles, door to door...
