A Real Boater September 24th 08 01:09 PM

Latest email scam...

Dear American:

I need to ask you to support an urgent secret business relationship
with a transfer of funds of great magnitude.

I am Ministry of the Treasury of the Republic of America. My
country has had crisis that has caused the need for large transfer of
funds of 800 billion dollars US. If you would assist me in this
transfer, it would be most profitable to you.

I am working with Mr. Phil Gramm, lobbyist for UBS, who will be my
replacement as Ministry of the Treasury in January. As a Senator, you
may know him as the leader of the American banking deregulation movement
in the 1990s. This transaction is 100% safe.

This is a matter of great urgency. We need a blank check. We need
the funds as quickly as possible. We cannot directly transfer these
funds in the names of our close friends because we are constantly under
surveillance. My family lawyer advised me that I should look for a
reliable and trustworthy person who will act as a next of kin so the
funds can be transferred.

Please reply with all of your bank account, IRA and college fund
account numbers and those of your children and grandchildren to
so that we may transfer your commission
for this transaction. After I receive that information, I will respond
with detailed information about safeguards that will be used to protect
the funds.

Yours Faithfully Minister of Treasury Paulson

People who believe in capitalism and democracy don't think governments
should make profits, or be in competition with private enterprise.
That's what communists do. Rather than the Government handing money
to these crooked institutions to replace the money now held by the
individuals who ran them, and took the money home, why not allow
mortgage holders to buy back their own mortgages at pennies on the
dollar? That would do more to stabilize the economey, and return
normalcy to people's lives. It would also preserve the value of
everyone else's homes, who is not in default.

Nice thought but will do nothing to fix overall bank credit problem.

I see no reason to bail out the shareholders of banks, insurance holding
companies, and investment firms. I have no objection to buying up
defaulted mortgages from their holders at a steep discount, and then
repackaging them for resale to others, so long as there is at the same
time an equal additional investment in extended unemployment insurance,
job retraining, and construction of infrastructure that puts Americans
back to work.

Frankly, the concept of taxpayers subsidizing millionaires so they don't
lose money is something I find repugnant.

Interesting, the bureaucrats at the Treasury are better at business than
the capitalists on Wall Street. Kind of makes a mockery of the years of
Republican calls for privatizing Social Security, prisons, toll roads,
etc., etc.,

I wonder if Americans will learn a lesson from this debacle, that
"capitalism" cannot work in the absence of strong regulation and a
government willing to force capitalists to obey the rules. All the "free
market" does is provide short-term profit to the greedy.

We learned after the Great Depression. It took us fifty years to forget
(remember Reagonomics?). We learn, the problem is capitalists don't.

Capitalism built this country. The fact that you forget that every
waking minute of every day of your life is really astonishing.

Damn, I thought it was indentured servants and slaves that built this
country. You may want to look back at the 1800s, where unbridled
capitalism caused a panic every ten years or so. Capitalism, properly
regulated is a great system. Unregulated, well, take a look around.
