many who plan on staying on Galveston Island, which is a barrier island.
They are forecasting 20' storm surge, which will just sweep away the
homes.

Sure there is. Darwin... The truly stupid will find ways to kill
themselves no matter how hard you try to save them...

On the other hand, there are those out there who just got unlucky.
There is a cargo ship out there in the Gulf, in the path of the storm,
with no wheel. It is in too far for the Coast Guard to get to them. 22
crew on that ship. Hope the thing holds up, they are dead in the water.
