Quicksilver is Merc OEM prop?

I was at West Marine today and picked up a Quicksilver prop (it turns
out mine cannot be fixed). The guy at the counter told me that
Quicksilver is the OEM line of props for Merc. It looks very similar
to the original prop except it does say QuickSilver on the side (the
original does not). I decided to stay with the Aluminum prop figuring
that hitting a steal prop could case a lot of damage. I"m thinking the
soft Al prop took most of the impact.
I'm hoping it fits. I didn't buy the hub kit because it looks the same
as the original so I'll try to save $40 and reuse the original.

Do yourself a favor and take it to a prop shop and ask if they can fix it.
West Marine clerks can run the gamut from being very knowledgeable about a
lot of stuff to knowing nada about anything.

as you are not using cash, that is;)

Unless you spun the hub, which is highly unlikely based on your
descripton of what happened, that prop is repairable - no aluminum
prop is unrepairable. I've had props that were worse than that after
getting up close and personal with Hackett's Reef and they were
repaired and back in use in a week.

You need to find a prop shop, or a marina who can send it out for
repair. If you talked to West Marine, you were likely talking to
summer help who may or may not have sufficient experience to even know
if the prop can be fixed or not.

Yep. Then have it repaired and carry it as a spare.

Sorry, I might have put two different things in the same though. Yes,
I took the prop to the Bayliner dealer and they recommended against
doing anything with it. The new prop I bought at West Marine was very
inexpensive though.

A spun hub can be fixed. It's just not worth fixing a prop that needs both
the hub and a lot of welding. He should be able to get a marina to send it
out for repair. If it can't be fixed he shouldn't be charged.

Actually it was the dealer who told me it wasn't worth fixing. Of
course they're excited to sell me a double-priced new prop. I'm not
sure who else in the area might fix props though. BTW: The hub appears
fine and I'm going to reuse it.

Don't know where you boat, but if it's near a large lake or near the
ocean, there's a prop shop around somewhere.

These things aren't that hard to fix. Call a few other dealers and
just ask them if they can repair props and who they would recommend.

Heck - within 50 miles of me in the hinterlands of NE CT, there are
four prop shops that I know of right off the top of my head.

What area? Where I live (central WV) there aren't any local shops, but a
truck from Blackburn Distributing up in PA comes by once a week and visits
all the marinas and stores to collect damaged props and deliver repaired
ones. Like others have said, I've seen worse looking props than yours
sitting on the repair shelf.

I agree with your OP, btw, about an aluminum prop absorbing damage that a
stainless steel one would pass along to more expensive parts.
