There was a boating "accident" this evening. 2 dead, 2 missing and 6 made
it to shore in the river near Tracy, CA. 10 people in a 14' aluminum skiff.
No life jackets, alcohol may be involved. Sad. They were all from
Guatemala, and lived in Oakland. Some were relatives. The paper referred
to the driver as the "Capt." Clueless. The driver is in jail on
manslaughter charges and $400k bail. Hard to put the blame on him in my
estimation. They were all adults and should have some responsibility for
their own wellbeing.

They should have never made it away from the dock... I would have
called the cops if I had seen that boat leaving the dock.

Even those totally inexperienced in things nautical should have known
that ten in a 14 ft boat is far too many. There can't have been much
freeboard. I mean things would surely look bogus to anyone. However,
the skipper is responsable always, and no court is going to overturn
that one.

"Stolen pickup rolls, 15 'illegals' thrown from the vehicle.."

What kind of stupid talk is that?
I bet a number of those people were never out in a small aluminum boat
before. Do you expect them to know the load ratings for that boat?
It's the owner, or captain, who is responsible for the welfare of his crew
and guests.
You gotta quit sippin' before noon.

1 am is when the reports came in. And the cops would probably be at the
coffee shop anyway.

True. I used to have a 14' Valco and it had a capacity of about 440#. Even
if the average for the 10 was 140#, I do not see how the boat floated with
1400# in it.

You are the one who should refrain from drinking the stupid juice. They
were fishing, so they have seen water and boats. Think about how crowded a
14' by 5' box would be with 10 people. And anyone of them could have looked
at the water about 1" below the gunnels. Unless they had a combined IQ of
200, there is no way they were not part of the accident! Calling the guy a
captain is stretching the language too far. And maybe he was not the owner,
borrowed or rented boat.

Even as a kid I knew that even 5 people in a 14 foot boat was too
many.

BTW: Don't stoop to the level of some members here with the insults.
