What did they do to my ETec?!?!?!?

I have a 2005 Evinrude ETec 90HP. Had it since new and love the engine. For
the first three years of use, the WOT top RPM's (turning a Viper 19-pitch
stainless prop) were right at 5200RPM. This gave good performance when I needed
it (although I usually cruise around 3800-4000 RPM) and I was happy with that.

Last fall I took the engine to the dealer to do the 3-year checkup recommended
by Evinrude. They did the usual stuff --- plugs, drain/fill lower unit, check
water pump, etc. Also reflashed the computer with the latest firmware.

I've had the boat out a couple times on smaller lakes this spring, but today was
the first time that I had a chance to make a high speed run down a long lake. I
was totally surprised to find my WOT RPM's have risen to an honest 5600.
Absolutely nothing has changed physically..... same boat, same prop, same load
of fishing stuff, and I had a full load of fuel.

Were there some "performance enhancements" to the firmware between 2005 (when
the motor was built) and last fall? I was happy with the motor before, but now
it REALLY sparkles.

There's your answer.

Mine is going in another couple of weeks.

There are only two possibilities:

The dealer removed the "governator."

The "reflash."

Then you better sell it quick before the more is gone.

OK, I've had several more outings since the first post, and this increase is
REAL. I consistently get 200-300 more RPM's and a corresponding increase in GPS
MPH. This is with the boat fully loaded, all equipment, full of fuel, etc.

Absolutely nothing has changed in this rig except for the 3-year maintenance
(which included reflashing the firmware.

I'm considering a more aggressive prop!

You need to be careful with that as I'm sure you know.

If I were you, I might consider SS four blade - your top end will stay
about the same, but oh my gosh, the acceleration is outstanding.

By the by, your 90 ETEC is about as perfect an technology/engine
combination as there ever has been. I hear comments from guys all the
time about the 90 ETEC and it's been nothing but superlatives.

I have been on Shortwaves Ranger with the 4 Blade. No question, if you
can go with a SS 4Blade, do it. And hopefully SW won't throw me
overboard next time we are out, but if I were you, I might email him
and see if he can point you in the right direction.. he knows guys. He
won't steer you wrong...
