Speaking of fuel..............

.......what is the fuel burn rate on your boat?

I have a Glastron GS209 powered by a single 4.3L 190 HP engine. I
tracked the fuel burn for several months and it generally calculated
out each time to be between 2.5 GPH and 3 GPH.

How about yours?

Are you averaging out the number of gallons burned over the hours of usage?

When going from one place to another on the Bay, I typically run at
around 23 knots. When I do, my electronic fuel burn "meter" says I'm
using about 4.9 gph. That's on a 21' center console with a 150 hp four
stroke Yamaha, two or three aboard, with a boat, engine, gear and fuel
weight of about 4100 pounds.

Usually, though, there's no reason to run even a full hour at that
speed, because most of the places I visit on the Bay aren't an hour
away. At a fast trolling speed, or harbor mavigation speed of about 6
mph, my GPH burn drops to about 1.5 gph.

I mark my engine hours at every fillup. The tank is topped off and I
note the gallons. I did that for several months to get a good
average. The run time included idling at dock to warm up, running up/
down the river to the Lake (no wake zone) and then cruise time on the
Lake, usually running anywhere from 25 to 35 mph and no WOT.

55 GPH at 25 Kts (Not worth the speed)
40 GPH at 21 Kts (Clean Plane, best cruise speed)
25 GPH at 11 Kts (Wahoo trolling at ALMOST plane...worst fuel economy )
5 GPH at 5 Kts (most economical... also the speed most likely to cause a
mutiny)

48 Ocean 1991 671 TIB + 12.5 KW genset running

Nice ride but I would hate to offer to pick up the tab at the pump!

When the fuel guage stops bouncing I get worried. Until then I just fill
the tank. I used to get 1.75-2 mpg average for a day. Probably better now
that I have switch to an EFI 350 vs. a carbed 351W. That is some 35-40 mph
running the river and some 25 mile per hour running. I troll with a Yamaha
T-8 and that gets about 1 sip a mile.

The ketch uses about 5 gallons per week to cruise the Atlantic Coast and
Caribbean. That's just for heating shower water and entering port if the
wind isn't right. $10/gallon is still reasonable for sailors.

If anyone is in a hurry, I suggest they FLY. God I hate to be at sea
with them....That sucks!

The wind dies, they go crazy worrying about getting somewhere. How
stupid! We're at sea! It's PARTY TIME until the wind comes back up! I
get to eat something WITHOUT bread on either side of it!...(c;

I get to SLEEP!....AHHH.....(C;

Last time I filled her, it cost me more than my first boat!!!! OUCH...

Since I am not retired yet... it's a matter of time cost of money. The
keys and the bahamas are 2-3hours away in the boat vs 8-12 so for a long
weekend etc (6 knots minus the gulfstream on the way over), it's nice to be
able to get there an back. When I bought the boat delivered red diesel
was 72 cents per gallon. Now we are at $3.80 and $4.80 in the islands....
I would trade right now for a 40 Nordhaven but 2 things are stopping me:
1) the trade in value of my boat is about 1/2 of what is was 2 years ago
2) The Nordhaven would cost me 1/2 of everyting I own + the cost of the boat
because my wife has not enbraced the concept of "enjoying the ride"

We have economized though... we tow a 17 whaler that only burns 5 GPH at 25
Kts. nearly nothing at trolling speed. We anchor the "condo" and use the
whaler most of the time.

I believe Wayne B. does the same. Wayne has a 48 or 49 foot Grand
Banks and cruises the south Florida area.
