Remove tire marks from hull

I have a Bayliner 185. The other day I "missed" the trailer a bit and
the hull rubbed up against the spare tire on the trailer. I tried just
rubbing the tire marks off the hull but that did not work. Do I need
more elbow grease, better products, a buffer?

Thanks!
-Robert

Have you tried kerosene?

I'd try a little paint thinner first and then some 'goo gone'. If neither
of them worked a little soft scrub applied very gently might do the job.
Wax afterwards.

Been there, done that.

Unfortunately, tire black is a major PIA. As long as the gelcoat
isn't scratched badly, use SoftScrub with bleach. Don't use a lot and
use it with a wet cloth. If that doesn't work (and it did on mine,
but not well enough), use a HD compound - just a little and again on a
wet cloth.

It will take a couple of minutes, but it does work.

I used soft scrub on mine, too! Mine was there because my outboard at
one time would once in awhile stall when you put it in gear and didn't
boost it just above idle. Of course this only happens when you really
need control, like when I came up to a dock where are rented houseboat
was and kicked 'er in neutral, then reverse to stop......when it
stalled and I ran the bow right up on the tires surrounding the dock!
Oh, and of course every single person on the fishing trip was present
and watching.

Thunderbird?? Do you still have it? Which model? I still have my
Commanche that I factory ordered in 1971 lol!
I've lost track of the number of other various boats, large and small,
that I've bought and sold since then but I've hung on to my
Thunderbird through thick and thin, even for the years in storage with
no motor on it. It's in current use these days and I won't be giving
it up anytime soon even if I buy other boats. It's the most versatile
of the boats I've ever owned. I know of one more here exactly like it
and I still see quite a few other models of the same vintage in use.
I'm thinkin' mine is going to outlast most of the new boats currently
in show rooms. If nothing else, those old T'birds were built to last
:-)

Rick ----will prolly be buried in mine ;-)

That boat looks like it just came out of the box. You did a nice job
maintaining her.

Tri hull? Or is it the "Flipper" TV show boat?

The guy down the street has a Thunderbird - tri-hulled with an ancient
Evinrude two stroke - 100 horse I think - I'll go look tomorrow.

It still looks fairly decent to boot.

Interesting.

Man, that thing is nice. I just love big square boats with lots of
room... Well kept too, what year was it made?

It's a tri hull but one of the later designs. The center is deeper
with more deadrise and the sponsons are smaller than the older models
like the "Flipper" boat. Mine looks a little like "Flipper" but it's a
bit smaller although it has a cuddy that sleeps two w/ a head. Came
with back to back fold out seats which are more comfortable for
sleeping but they've long since been replaced with pedestal seats.
Transom and motor well has been reworked too. Takes a 25" shaft motor
now on a 10" setback bracket instead of 20" shaft and I had a casting
platform fabricated in place of the motor well. Still serves the same
purpose though as water over the transom just runs directly back out
over the transom instead of through two small scuppers.
I owned a '64 model Cheyenne before I bought the Commanche. Those
original designs are what produced the "rattle your teeth" reputation
of Cathedrals. Mine takes rought water as well as any modified V hull
though. Obviously I like it a lot as I've kept it for 37 years ;-)
(Jeeeze time flies)

Know the style well. One of my fraternity brothers had access to a 20
footer (his Dad's) and we spent a lot of time on that boat. His Dad
leased a fishing camp on one of the canals down Venice way and we
spent a lot of weekends down there - Dixie beer, crawdad boils, Dixie
beer and catfish, Dixie beer and fried redfish - oh, did I mention
Dixie beer? :)

As a matter of fact, one of my more memorable experiences was gigging
flounder on an incoming tide and, fueled by Dixie beer, managed to gig
myself. :)

(Jeeeze time flies)

Tell me about it.

I've got to get down there again sometime. Is the Dixie plant still
in business?

Man, that was some awful beer.

The Dixie brewery got knocked out by Katrina, but someone is trying to

Correct on all counts. And on par with Jax in awfulness.
I've lost track of the progress of Dixie's come back. There was some
sort of controversy, last I heard, about opening back up in their old
location. Par for the course in New Orleans. The quintessential man
made disaster complicated by the quintessential political aftermath.
I'd rather deal with a natural disaster any day. What a mess.
