Why aren't cruising boats rent-able?

You can. You might be startled at the prices, though.

Do a google search for 'yacht charters' and start combing through the
results.

know where to get ski boats, by the way, but we wouldn't know where or
how to get a Cruiser for a weekend.

Piloting a boat and driving an RV are radically different. You already know
how to drive so it's conceivable that, with a little practice, handling an
RV is not too much of a stretch.

With a boat, there's many more variables. Water, weather, vessel systems
AND whatever lack of knowledge you have on how to pilot a boat.

There's plenty of outfits willing to charter you a boat, your biggest
concern should be what happens once it's in your hands...

Actually, unless the guy has a reasonably verifiable boating resume there
aren't.

Fortunately, you can't just take off in a 50-foot, 40,000 pound, 800 horsepower
machine from most charter comapnies without doing a reasonable job of
convincing the management (and often actually demonstrating) you have the
capacity and experience to handle it.

Where and what kind of boat are you looking to rent?
I charter out my 42' motor yacht style Grand Banks here on the West coast

of
Florida and in the Bahamas in the early summer.
