NEW BOATER, HELP

Hello everybody! I’m from California and have a cabin in Lake Tahoe.
I’m finally ready to buy a boat, and would appreciate any help I can
get. I will be using the boat all around...wakeboarding, crusing, and
fishing. People say Lake Tahoe can be pretty choppy often..... I was
looking into the Mercury Boats....I prefer an open bow....

Should I buy brand new? Where should I buy from...boat show, dealer?
What brand? What size/kind motor?

Thank You Very Much! Any input is much appreciated!

Yes, Tahoe can get very nasty. Mostly in the afternoon. Just make sure you
are near shore or a protected area when the winds come up. The South Shore
is normally nicer than the North Shore. Buy used. Let someone else take
the big hit for a new boat. Look are one 2-3 years old. Look at the boats
you like that you see on the lake. Ask the owners about the boats and their
likes and dislikes. I take my 21' boat out of Meeks or South Shore ramps
and fish either by Cave Rock or over towards Richardson's. Mine is high
sided, and I still have to run slow at times coming back from Emerald Bay.
Look at one big enough to handle both the lake and the normal amount of
people you will have aboard. I pretty much limit my load to 6 and with that
many aboard I could not ski at Tahoe. And I run a 5.7L FI 330 hp jetdrive.
Get a bigger motor as you are at 6000' and the lack of O2 is noticeable.

That's the best advice: talk to others who boat there. Ask them if they'd
buy the same boat again. Ask them what they like about their boat and what
they'd look for if they were going to replace it.
You can always save money by buying used, but if you do, have some one check
it out for you to make sure the hull is sound and the engine isn't ready to
break down.
Whatever you save can be quickly spent on repairs.
