About Yanmar diesels
Recently, I expressed interest in a 36' Hatteras that had been repowered
with Yanmar diesels. I had some reservations after hearing that they were high RPM engines .... (was told they ran at 3600 RPM at WOT) .... and I felt a little uncomfortable with that, even though the engines had a good reputation. I checked the engine specs on the Yanmar website and discovered that they are actually rated for 3300 RPM at WOT. That's still high as diesels go, but not that uncommon for a modern turbo diesel built in 2006. The 1999 vintage Volvo's I had where rated at 2800 to 3000 RPM, depending on application. I suspect that since this particular Hatteras was repowered, they may have screwed up the pitch on the props. Adding a couple of inches to the pitch would probably bring it within specs. Doesn't matter though .... someone else jumped on the boat. It was a steal at that price, given the recent upgrades. Eisboch |

Our local Yanmar dealer under pitches all the boats he repowers, they were not flexable at all about doing this. When their that insistant, their's probably a reason, like reduced life. Myself, I'd rather have Cats or Cummins. I just see too many boats powered with Yanmars that smoke, with very low hours. And owners suddenly getting rid of the boats (this was before the bottom fell out of prices). Makes me more than a little worried about them. The high RPM's are because those are short stroke engines. You just can't get the piston moving as fast on a long stroke engine, resulting in lower RPM's. |

How do you think they are so economical? :) It's pretty amazing - Jimmy Newtron, Boy Genius modified them for me. |
