On Saturday we're halfway to Spring!

Boaters rejoice.
Saturday, February 2, is (in the olde tradition) "Midwinter's day." It
is halfway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox.

The ancient holiday of E-molc (spelled Imbloc) celebrated February 2
is one of the fire festivals, and denotes the point of the year where
the Goddess changes from aged crone to young virgin. It is also the
day to celebrate Brigid's Day, or (for those who prefer) St. Brigid's
Day.
The Celtic Goddess Brigid oversees all handcraft, smithcraft, dairy,
poetry and midwifery.

The Catholic Saint Brigid was believed to live in Ireland in the 5th
Century. She founded a monastery, and was involved in some miracles.
Coincidentally, the Catholics consider her the saint of smiths, poets,
and midwives.

February 2nd is also 40 days from Christmas Eve. Under ancient Jewish
law a woman was required to undergo "purification" for 40 days
following birth. Mary''s purification would have been up on
Midwinter's Day.

Another coincidence; during the Roman Catholic celebration of
Candlemas (observed on Feb.2) the congregation parades with lighted
candles to represent the entry of Christ, the Light of the World, into
Jerusalem. (Source: The Catholic Enyclopedia: Candlemas). Those
celebrating E-molc light every lamp in a house or light candles in
each room to signify the sun's rebirth. Some women celebrants wear
crowns of lighted candles.

But for everybody else who could give a schlitzel; "Happy Groundhog
Day!" We're officially halfway to spring on Saturday. :-)

Ah yes - the prognostication of the varioius groundhogs around the
world.

Connecticut has it's own version of Punxsutawney Phil, Chuckles the
Groundhog.

Chuckle's prognostications follow the same format as Punxsutawney Phil
- sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter weather. If
he does not see his shadow, there will be an early Spring.

And Connecticut, the Steady State, land of Nutmeg, The Charter Oak,
liberal yet oddly conservative, will always have an early Spring.

Chuckles is blind. :)

There was a groundhog in Missouri once. I shot it when I was a kid. Had to
hit it in the ass 'cause it was running from me. Took a few shots from that
..22, and I was probably using 'shorts'. It took a lot of pop bottles to buy
a box of 'long rifle' shells.

Anyway, my dad saw this as an opportunity to enjoy another meal off mother
nature, and he decided to roast the groundhog. So he put some seasonings on
it, put it in the oven, and we sat back for a few hours waiting for this
epicurean delight to cook.

'Twas the toughest piece of meat I'd ever put in my mouth. None of us could
chew it. It went into the trash. We had sandwiches.

I could have taken it to the other side of the tracks and sold it for a
half dollar. That would have been the wise thing to do.

Hey, Harry gets to choose.

He can venerate The Goddess or St. Brigid. He can observe Midwinter's
Day or celebrate Imbolc. If he so chooses, he can attend a Candlemas
service at the local parish or contemplate the end of Mary's 40-day
"purification" since Chrismas Eve. He can worship, throw rocks at, or
just casually observe the Groundhog on his day.

Or, none of the above. :-)

Instead of high temps in the 40's and lows in the mid 30's, we get
high temps in the 50's and lows in the mid 40's. Still rains everyday,
of course. During late spring early summer we typically see high temps
in the 60's, lows about 50, and during peak summer high temps will
reach the mid to upper 70's (sometimes low 80's) with lows about 60.
We have one or two heat waves each year where highs get into the 90's,
but as soon as the mercury climbs past about 85 all the natives (like
myself) start bitching about the oppressive conditions. :-)

And it rains here. Everyday.
