Intake manifold question

Chrysler 318 marine engine intake manifold has the casting between where
the thermostat goes and the right water intake to the manifold blocked.
This looks like it was made that way. Why? I am wanting to use this
manifold for automotive use. What can I do? It has a big hole in the top
of that about 1" pipe thread. Can I run a tee from there and 1 going to
water pump and other for heater?

Don't know the 318 manifold fittings, but aren't 318 manifolds still
available at auto boneyards cheap? Might be better to use an
auto manifold than tinker with that marine manifold.

Intake manifold question

It's been a while since the 318 was used in boats and there's not too many
technical types in this news group anyway. So the chances of you getting an
answer are slim.

Now if you want to ask a question about president bush that's a different
story, you've come to the right place.

James,
I see what you are talking about asking a Bush question. I think I won't
ask because I might not like the answer OR I might make someone mad.

Seriously, where might find out about the manifold? I have tried on the
web every place I can think of.

Bull****. You just hang on, LD, someone will have an answer.

Intake manifold question

Let me give you some generalities. Very few automotive engine parts are
made differently for the marine world. On the chevy and ford engines I am
familiar with you can pretty much just take a "marine" long block including
the intake and use it in the automotive world. One exception to this is the
exhaust manifolds, they are water jacketed in the marine version. The cams
tend to be very slightly different with an emphasis on low end power and
less overlap between the intake and exhaust profiles. The water normally
gets mixed with the exhaust fairly close to the engine so you can't have any
reversion at low rpm. A lot of the engine parts will be more commonly found
on truck and heavy duty applications but that is not an issue.

So the intake manifold you have may well be identical to the automotive
version. But you would need to hook it up the way it is "supposed" to be
used in the automotive world. In the marine world there is often two water
pumps, one to get water from under the boat and then the conventional one on
the front of the engine. Boats are constantly getting new water. So the
thermostat hookup and water hoses are usually quite different on a boat so
that when the engine is cold the water from the first pump is allowed to
bypass the engine and go to the exhaust. When the engine warms up then the
water circulates through the engine first before going out the exhaust.
