I don't think anyone knows. Last time he was here was not a good
thing.

IIRC, Dave sold his Bayliner. He had long spoken of plans to move to
the Pacific NW and purchase a larger boat suitable for long range
cruising, (without "auxiliary" fuel cans lashed to the gunwales). I
don't think anybody really knows if he ever moved out of Kansas or
bought a larger boat, but.......

I was buying a hot dog at the little kiosk outside of the Tacoma
branch of Home Depot earlier this year when I noticed two guys
standing a little ways from me at the counter. It's been maybe 8 or 9
years since I last saw him in person and I wouldn't claim to be able
to recognize him- but as soon as I saw those two gentlemen something
in the back of my mind said, "Hey, one of those guys is Dave
Mann....or somebody who looks just like him." The guy I thought might
have been Dave seemed to looking at me in return, as if trying to
place my face. (Probably wondering in which nightmare that scary
visage had last appeared). :-)

So it coulda been. Could also not have been. I didn't ask. If it
wasn't him
I didn't want to have an awkward conversation with a total stranger,
and if it was him I didn't want to have an awkward conversation with
Skipper.
Funny somebody brought him up here, I don't think about the guy twice
a year.

Heh.

He did have a way of making almost everyone else in the group appear
sane and on good behavior.

I think you can conclude that:

1) He bought a boat thinking it was a good idea to tow it 2500 miles
each way to water.

2) He quickly found out that it wasn't much fun and cost a lot in
upkeep on the undersized trailer

3) Failing in his quest to be a real boater, he came here to be an
armchair seafarer, which, too, offered him little enjoyment, since he
was frequently called to task for offering foolish and dangerous
advice to newbie boaters.

Having put the "highly modified 2252" Bayliner up for sale, he is now
mercifully boatless and probably does his cruising aboard the Carnival
Cruise Line.

The last time somebody came here to post in his name, the posts were
so acerbic and off base that I actually called Skipper and offered him
a chance to clear his name. Much to my horror, I learned that it
really *was* him posting and he was doing so because, in his mind,
some of the members of this group were too well thought of and he
wanted to change that.

Go Figure......

Easy. I figure he is losing it. There were signs before but his last
appearance removed all doubt.
