Mad Fin Shark Tournament. What the hell is the point in "sharking"?
Catching pelagics only to release them, under circumstances in which
most of them are gut-hooked and therefore probably will die?

I do C&R fishing myself, but not for pelagics you have no intention of
eating, not for a long, long time. I can see catching and keeping a tuna
or some other "eating" fish, or a kingfish, or Spanish macks, et
cetera, but catching fish you have no intention eating?

Folly.

like you all;)

It really *is* a lame program. I vote with my finger and just keep
channel surfing

same here. maybe we should also send a note to the program advertisers
that we ain't supportin them if they support this 'sport'.

You would like it better if they killed and kept the sharks?

Ohhhhh, I'm getting excited here. Watching them fishing off Beverly
Mass. Killing stripers... I am taking the family out tomorrow to the
CT River base and out the mouth if I don't get skeeret with this low
transom;) I wanna' have a day like that, actually I want to go out
tonight, but then I may not be up for tomorrow... tick, tick, tick, is
it time to go fishin' yet? "It's always time to go fishin' son, just a
case of gettin' up and doin' it;)"

That would probably be a very effective approach. Anyone have
information on the sponsors and/or how to contact them?

Actually, the mortalilty rate is pretty low. There was a study a few
years ago where they caught/tagged/released lemon sharks and the
survival rate was upwards of 90%.

Having said that, these types of tournaments are much, much better
than tournaments like the big Martha's or Montauk tournaments. Just
two years ago, they took a 1,200 lb Tiger back and the Captain of that
boat knew damn well they weren't going to make it back in time, but
killed the thing anyway. That was a freakin' shame.

Personally, I'm all for in-water release, tagging and measuring. I
really like the Xtreme Billfish Tournament system - independant judges
onboard with video of the measure, release and tag with self-release
radio tags. Tags are good for two weeks and the judging agency does
all it can to verify the tags as good.

It's expensive, but the only way to run a pelagic tournament to my way
of thinking.

I always thought Sea Gull Skeet Shooting would be good. I don't think
there would be very many complaints from anyone.
