How do i remove the stripping along the hull
 

Hi guys

I own a Bayliner 2052 which has a 1" or so grey stripe decal running
all around the lower hull.

This has been damaged to one side on the front where it was originally
moored to a bouy which
in turn rubbed this decal.
Now,its really stuck well and i was wondering if anyone had
experienced removing and reinstating this stripe.
Any ideas would be very much appreciated.

As always, good advice Tom.

A caution though.............be careful if using a heat gun as you can melt
the gelcoat pretty easily, thus the Toms advice on keeping it on low, and
far enough from the boat. I learned the hard way several years ago when
removing striping from our 270 Sundancer. A hairdryer will do the job,
without the danger of melting the gelcoat........if you have the patience.

Get a rubber wheel attachment for a drill from an auto body store. It
will wheel the decal stripes off easily. Set the drill at the lowest
speed that removes the striping. Don't stay in one spot too long or you
can burn the gel coat.

WD40 will also do a good job of removing the glue left after you
remove the decal.

The stripe is a vinyl overlay, so yes, using a low heat heat gun i
think should do the job.

Low heat to remove the stripe and goo-gone to remove any adhesive
still on the boat. You can use automotive pinstriping if you want.
It's basically the same.

My understanding is that it is essentially an eraser... sort of like
an old style ink eraser...... a very fine abraisive.

If they haven't been on there since forever, your best course of
action is to peel them using the least heat necessary....

I have now just gone out and bought a cheap heat gun so hopefully over

will wheel the decal stripes off easily. Set the drill at the lowest

worked far better than the heat gun. I had no problem with the gel
coat, I kept the drill boverned down to the slowest speed that still
removed the pin stripes. (my stripes were 15 y.o.

Yeah, well, you have me beat by a few years. The taught us the basics of
a slide rule in H.S. but they were up to (if I remember right) SR55
ny the time I graduated. I remember my older brother "having" to get a
SR10 when he was attending Penn State. They started to allow them for
tests, and a slide rule just wouldn't cut it anymore. My parents paid
about $120 for it.
