Humphrey's status
Hubert Humphrey was still Majority Whip in August 1964. The post of
Vice President was vacant, LBJ having succeeded to the Presidency upon the death of JFK. Humphrey was elected Vice President in November 1964 and took office in January 1965. The first person to assume a vacant Vice Presidency was Nelson Rockefeller, who took over after Spiro Agnew resigned. |
