First repair of the season.
 

Well, I went fishin' again yesterday, got another nice trout and a
bunch of huge panfish, don't eat panfish except calicos in fall and
spring, no worms. Anyway, on the way in, the engine (8 horse) went to
idle and would not come up until I took off the cover, and held open
the carb. Small plastic piece that I had actually repaired several
years ago broke, no problem with the engine though, phew... So I went
to see the guys on Sullivan ave and got a new part, cost me almost six
dollars! Like I told my dad, if that's the only repair I have to make
this year, I am doing oh tay!

On another note, I took back the Abu Garcia bait caster to the store,
it sucked. It wanted 8-17 pound test line, but would not even adjust
enough drag for 4 pound. Tried two of them, finally gave up. I will
keep looking but I did get an old one I had rebuilt. It works ok, but
I still prefer my little spinning rods.

Still glad I'm not making repairs on anything bigger, even if it is
slow, and lacking in some creature comforts. You know, no widescreeen,
no john.;)

I didn't like them. Most of my bait casters are Quantum which I like
a lot. The sole exception is a top end Shakespeare.

I've got a 6000-C which is easily adjusted for 4lb drag, though I
never go that light with it. It replaced my old 5000 which my son now
has. The 6000-C is about 15 years old, and frankly I haven't taken
good care of it. Only rinsed it with fresh water and oiled it a
couple times.
Just tested it and it pulls smooth with the drag set for a couple
pounds. Noticed it is "Made in Sweden."
Except for the 5000 and 6000-C I've always bought rods and reels at
K-mart type end of season close outs. You can often get decent combos
for less than 20 bucks. Rod quality is easy to see/feel, reel quality
is told by testing the drag first, and by time. But I've got some
cheap Shakespeare and Penn spinning reels that came on combos that
have worked flawlessly for many years.

If you tighten it up even to it's max, you could still strip 6-8 pound
without breaking it. No pressure on the drag, even though they
reccomended up to 17 pound test line.

Are you sure the line is not slipping on the spool? I've never had this
problem with mono line but when I first started using the "super" lines I
did have a problem,

If you're using the super lines tie a few feet of mono to the end that
attaches to the spool.

Hummmm, I did not specifically look for that, but I was looking close
enough that I can say it probably was not slipping on the spool. I use
regular mono, installed at the local sport and bait shop.
