Brand new 50-foot fantial motoryacht, $219,000
 

Went to an interesting launching.

A local fundamentalist church supports some orphanages in So. Africa.

One of the members is a pretty skilled boat builder, and he dreamed up
a project to support the mission. The church started a boat building
company, and the first one splashed Friday.

Thain Boats will all be cold molded. Hull #1 is a reproduction of a
classic fantail yacht from the 1930's. Most people will think it's a
restored classic rather than a brand new boat.

I've been told there are 3500 manhours labor in the boat, plus
materials.
A lot of the labor has been donated by church members, so the
company's cost of building the boat is pretty low. They hope to sell
this particular model with single diesel power for $219,000, a figure
at which they hope to be kept very busy building boats and still be
able to send a steady stream of money to AIDS orphans in So, Africa.

It was surprising that there wasn't a lot of press at the launch, I
think I was the only guy there not affiliated with the church.

Master Marine's center consoles were excellant fishing boats - had to
be to do what they did with them. I've been in several restored MM CC
and have been extremely impressed with their overall performance and
ride even under minimal power. Try and find a good, sound trailerable
deep water 28 foot CC today - it's impossible.

The fact the the Unification Church built them isn't relevant - they
were great boats.

Actually, it doesn't surprise me - AIDS in Africa, missionaries,
church members building a boat to sell to support that effort - not
much in the way of news there that would attract media. After the
Rev. Moon tried to rape the tuna grounds off the NE coast, boats and
churches... :)

I'd like to see the pictures though. I'd be glad to thumbnail them
and host them on my site if you want. I can give you FTP access and
you can do your own upload - I'll just pull them down, thumb them and
repost.

Nose art for boats.

Now that's a concept. I think you ought to do it - get a really good
artist to paint a hole in the bow. :)
