Ok, friend of mine sent me an .avi this morning of a monster striper
he caught off of Martha's yesterday.

Since I upgraded Quicktime to Quicktime Pro and installed iTunes, I
can't open .avi files. The QT player will open, but it doesn't play
the video. I took another .avi with my cellphone camera and it won't
open or play that either - just a blank screen.

It also won't play in Windows Media. It will open, but the video
won't play. However I do get sound.

WTH? This all started with the upgrade and the new version of iTunes
- avi's used to play just fine and dandy in Windows. QT won't play
mov either.

The other issue is that all .jpgs now open in QT. I can't switch it
back to the Wiindows display.

Any ideas on why that happened?

And how to fix it?

For one, the avi codec sounds like it's hosed. You can either use the
System File Checker utility in Windows Start run cmd, enter,
sfc/scannow, enter. That will make sure all the Windows files are correct.

Or and Google "avi codecs" and you see any number of places to get an avi
codec.

John H suggested probably the easiest way to re-associate avi files with
Windows Media Player. Like a lot of things in Windows there are several ways
to reach the same end result.

Here's another way, from the help files:


To associate a file name extension with a file type
Open Folder Options in Control Panel.
Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click Folder Options
..
On the File Types tab, click New.
Type a new or existing file name extension, and then click Advanced.
In Associated File Type,
Type or select New to create a file type to associate with the file name
extension.

Type or select a different file type to associate with the extension.
Notes

When you type a file extension in the Create New Extension dialog box, the
Associated File Type list displays the file type that is associated with
that extension. To select New, scroll to the top of the list.
For information about how to make modifications to the file type, click

Registered file types, click the file type, and then click Change.

That's one thing I don't have to worry about. I don't try to figure it
out, I just get my 16 yr old daughter. she'll figure it out.

Some of these rogye programs reassociate themselves with files, even
ones they can't run, every time they start. Quicktime is evil IMHO.
You can go blow it away and it still keeps coming back.

You're right. Some of them automatically switch file associations at
startup. With them, one must find the on/off button in the program's setup.
That can sometimes be a bitch, but the switches are usually there
somewhere.

It's simple. You need to re-do the file associations the newly installed
programs stole.

Open Window's Explorer. Drop down the tools menu. Select folder options.
Select the "file types" tab. Scroll down to AVI. Highlight it. It will
say under the details section Opens with: Yours probably says something
other than Windows Media player. Click the change button and associate
it with Windows Media Player or whatever program you andt it associated
with. Then click OK OK OK as many times as it takes to close all the
windows.

That should do it for you.

Do a search for this codex:
Combined-Community-Codec-Pack-2006-07-28.exe
That will play pretty much anything.

Tom, if you figure it out let me know. I'm suffering the same symptoms on my
notebook after an itunes update. Actually mine was worse as I actually had
to do a system restore to avoid a bad memory references after the update.
The only way I can open .avi's is to right click and choose open with and
select Play With Internet Explorer.

I've been busy working on the new boat and haven't been online much. I've
had her out on Quinsig a few times and I think I've gotten most of the bugs
out...
