Bottom Paint?

Hi Everyone,

I have an 88 Donzi Regazza. I'm considering removing the bottom paint. I
run the boat in fresh water in the Hudson River. Do I really need bottom
paint? Can I just polish the Gel coat and power wash it each season?
Thanks in advance.

David

Do you trailer or dock it?

If docked for the season, then you should bottom paint it. If not the
underwater growth on your hull will cause significant drag and slow you
down, resulting in higher fuel consumption.

If you don't keep it docked there is no need for bottom paint......just wash
the entire boat down after hauling it out for the day.

I doubt it. The Hudson is tidal all the way to Albany and brackish to
Poughkeepsie and beyond. North of there you might be OK but you'll
get slime and grass on the bottom unless you dry store.

Bottom Paint?

The '82 Whaler montauk I'm restoring has nasty layers of bottom paint,
chipping and flaking... I'm interested in removing it, just unsure
about how to start. What type of paint stripper will be safe on the
gel coat? Is it generally safe to use a pressure washer on the boat
too? I use this boat in freshwater lakes and ponds only. How is
Soystrip??

This stuff works great. A bit pricey, but it does work.

Know somebody who used it to do the bottom paint on some contract
boats - 24 of 'em. Cut his work time in by 75% according to him and
he's not prone to exaggeration.
