Gas cap busted.

Greetings all, with all this great weather in Savannah, GA I’ve been
itchin to go fishin. One problem, I can’t get any freakin gas in the
boat. I have a Perko locking gas cap and the inner mechanism spins
freely no matter which way I turn the key. How do I get the cap off? I
thought of drilling it but I’m worried about getting debris in the
tank. Any suggestions???

Thanks,
John

You may have to replace the assembly. Remove the filler assy and get a new
one, or drill the cap with it off the boat.

Pound a large flat bladed screwdriver into the lock cylinder. Turn with
vise grips.

I wouldn't recommend using an electric drill on a screwed up gas cap.
You might find that it gets "removed" in a way you didn't foresee when
you started the process.

You could use a brace and bit. Any metal shavings that fell into the
tank will either spend the next several years sloshing around down
there or be intercepted by your fuel filter.

JR's method will also work- but all that pounding on screw drivers,
etc, has to be done carefully or you risk scratching or damaging your
boat.
