Radial trailer tires..
As odd as this sounds, I think I have porous rims on two of the tires
on my Ranger. Anybody know if you can use tubes with radial tires? |
Radial trailer tires..
Last time I looked for tubes (about 2 years ago), I found they
practically no longer exist. Really. The ones I found on the net (none local)for my trailer were $25 apiece. The local tire places were, like, "Huh? Tubes? Haven't seen one in years. Might be able to special order one...." Bought new tire. BTW: Prolly bead leaks on yours. Squirt some soapy water around the rim. If it foams, they're leaking. I don't think the tires are bad, but a small leak around the rim[s] Rec.boats at Lee Yeaton's Bayguide http://www.thebayguide.com/rec.boats --- avast! Antivirus: Outbound message clean. It's not that - there aren't any leaks around the rims or the valve stems - first thing I checked. There doesn't appear to be any external causes like a nail or such as that. I pulled the rims off and am taking them to the tire shop and have them looked at. The reason I asked is because I had a problem with one of the rims on my F-250 (aluminum) which went porous - no apparent warning. When they pulled the tire, you could see the small area which powdered - you couldn't see it from the outside unless you knew where it was from the inside. I had heard that you can't use tubes with radial tires which is why I asked. I'd hate to have to buy new rims - those things are expensive and I'd have to get four of them to match. |

On rims that are porous, usually a single miniscule route for the air to escape, there is an epoxy coating that they can put on th inside of the wheel fixing the problem. |

You do need to use radial tire tubes, which are hard to find. You might do well to get some yourself, and provide them to your tire shop, they won't have them. |

Tom, I really don't know, so I'm asking. Why are they different from a standard automotive rim? And: I can understand an alluminum or magnesium rim being porous, but a steel rim is highly unlikly, that is unless they're rusted through, which is highly unlikely as well. |

Not sure about radial tires... but I had a problem with a new bias ply tire left to sit over the winter on my old utility trailer. Tire lost it's air & wouldn't hold any more..(flat spotting or rust on rim) I bought a tube for it but I understand the tire can now run hotter. This didn't matter on my old 'dump' trailer which stayed close to home. For my baby (Sandpiper 565) only a new tire & rim would do! Get out and spend some money..... it must be weighing down your pant pockets. |

Yes Tom, you can use tubes. However, I recommend a can of "Slime" or
similar tire/rim sealant. Should last the life of the tire and you won't need a tube. It sure has worked for me in the past. Admitedly not a very elegant solution (get it?) but it's effective.
