Well, this pic describes them well.

http://www.mercuryarchive.com/1979to...ColonyPark.jpg

My 89 merc grand marquis sedan was really getting clapped out. with no
more fun. Oh my son still drives it back ad forth to work, but even
he's complainging about it being no fun either. hear and air don't
work, windows don't work, needs alighned. weak springs, leaky trunk, I
could keep going. about it being no fun, but eh. whats the point.

SO! as luck (or fate) would ahve it, I ran across a 1991 Grand Marquis
Colony Park wagon . it's nice (really!) 113,000 mi "Rich Corinthian
leather (no tears) loaded with about every option you could get in
1991. ie it's got all the butt wipes!

I bought it locally for $750.00. I thought that was worth my time.

My wife rolled her eyes when she saw it, but then again, I bought it
for me... not for her. She thinks I should have bougth a late model
truck. I told her, we were going boating, not to a gala outing at the
yacht club.

"Yes ... we're going where fish poop, not to a style show".

No Its obvious, I'm not a slave to fashion, But on the road these
things will get 20-22 mpg, have reasonable performance and the same
drive train as a 1/2 ton pick up, and you can carry more than 3 people
in them.

I don't need a truck, so I dont' have a truck, and If I do need a
truck, I can borrow my dad's any time.

I'm glad I found a decent wagon that wasn't headed for the crusher, or
the Demo Derby.

all I gotta do now is find a reese hitch for it, trailer wiring,a nd
I'm done.

Those were (are) great old cars. I had an '82 Ford Country Squire, an '85
and an '87 Marquis sedan. Decent mileage for the era and size and a very
comfortable ride. My kids were embarrassed to be seen in the '82 wagon.
It reminded them of the car Chevy Chase drove in "Vacation".

LOL!

Today my daughter asked me if I'd give her a ride to school.

"Sure! you want to go in the "cruiser"?

She immediatly hopped into her moms 2003 Chrysler Town and Country
van.

I guess she expressed her opinion.

Also I was fascinated that I found that pic. With exception of the
years, those two cars are the spittin' image of what I have.Same color
and all. I cant pull the reese hitch off the sedan because it's
welded on, and the guy that did it, really did quality work!

I finally got a "woody!"

BTW, Pulling my Chris Craft Scorpion 169 with a single axle trailer,
my old sedan got 18 mpg if I took it easy with the speed limit. 15 if
I pushed it a bit.

The 23' cuddie on a dual axle trailer ironically pulls easier. so I
expect I'll get about the same milage pulling a larger load.

One thing I've noticed is theres a lot of cute little SUVs out there
(Dodge Durango?) That don't get that kind of milage while pulling
nothing.

A fried of mine had a Durango and he gets about 15-18 mpg with it,
with no load.

He's not impressed.

I suppose I shouldn't be so hasty.

I've already ditched the limp 65a alternator, and made a 130 for it.
When I repo my beater merc from my son (he can afford his own work
car!) I'll pul the dual transmission cooler, and 3 core radiator, and
this time I'm going for electric cooling and get rid of the clutch
fan. I always thought electric was mre efficient, because on the
road, they rarely kick on, while the clutch fan is always dragging,
even at a minimum. and though town the fan is turning at a slow speed
where the electrics can kick on and give the same cooling effect as
driving about 60 mph.

it saves fuel, and more efficient cooling.
