Last I knew, Yamaha made and some of the components.

They made the powerhead on my 2001 Mercury 115 EFI four stroke. The
rest is from Mercury. That may have changed. I remember reading about
some issues or lawsuits between the two companies.

The powerhead is Yamaha but all the bolt on parts and the foot is Merc
according to my mechanic.

Thank you. That's what I suspected, but it's getting hard to tell.
Was in Bass Pro Shops recently and saw a 30hp Merc efi fs, with pull
start, and thought, that looks like a Nissan with a black paint job.

Anyway, I have a new Merc 90 efi fs on a new 16' aluminum fishing rig
(first tin rig I've had). Anxious to see how it works. Had a Merc 60
fs on a pontoon boat and it was a reliable motor.

Until this year, Mercury used Yamaha powerheads.
But this past weekend I attended a boat show and noticed major
differences in the appearance of new Mercs and Yamahas. I quizzed a
sales guy and he told me Mercury is making their own powerheads now. I
haven't checked further so take that for what it's worth (I'm normally
a little skeptical of car salesmen selling boats). But there's a
definite difference in their appearance.

Mercury and Yamaha got into a big lawsuit a couple of years ago. As I
understand it, Yamaha wnated to change the terms of the contract that
they had signed with Merc. Yamaha lost and that contract has now expired.

Merc's mid-range four strokes used to have the same displacement
powerhead as its suppliers. Now, they're different. That was the first
clue.
